Dermot Gallagher disagrees with Daniel Farke over controversial Leeds United decision vs Burnley

Leeds United were denied a first half penalty in Saturday’s clash at Elland Road

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, has issued his assessment on the contentious penalty call in Leeds United’s defeat to Burnley.

Whites manager Daniel Farke believed his team should have been awarded a penalty kick in the first half of the Elland Road match after

Manor Solomon was brought down by Joe Worrall’s challenge.

United’s players asked for a penalty, but referee James Bell refused and granted a corner. Gallagher said live on Sky Sports News’ ‘Ref

Watch’ segment: “Brilliant refereeing Rob because the defender really gets the ball. He gets the ball, despite the fact that it appears to be a

penalty. As he comes around here, he gets the ball; it’s an excellent decision.”

When asked about the incident, Burnley head coach Scott Parker responded: “I’m not sitting on the fence, but I haven’t seen it. To be

honest, I did not think it was in real time. It seems that he got a toe on it. I believe it would be unfair for me to remark on it.”

Farke refused to be discouraged following their first Championship loss of the season. “Of course it’s the most frustrating thing in football

when you go back to the dressing room and can hardly explain why you didn’t win this game,” he remarked.

“After this difficult international break, just one session together, I didn’t expect us to be so dominant, so I was extremely pleased with our

domination, how we started on the front foot and dominated every statistic.

“In crucial moments, we were ineffective. We should have scored after two minutes; we needed a stronger finish, Mateo one-on-one with

Willy Gnonto, then eight yards out.

“We should get a penalty again. There are several corners, but only one team scores from a corner for us. Manor [Solomon] is there with

the poor decision, deciding to spin around and not take this chance; he slipped and they were gone with an 85-yard counter.

Congratulations and credit to them for a successful conclusion.

“When I compare how they scored to what we created, I see that we had better, simpler scoring opportunities that we passed on. This is

where we need to be self-critical. I was disappointed to have to yield in such a scenario.

“We could discuss how we could have produced more favorable opportunities. The goalkeeper made some great saves. It’s difficult

because the second half was disrupted by numerous injuries, replacements, and some time waste. Sometimes you need to score from a set

piece. We were in terrific positions, near to the box.

“It’s quite natural; they’re encouraged to go deeper and deeper, which is obviously challenging. Many of our important players felt a little

more pressure in the second half due to international commitments. We substitute some of them who are usually on the pitch.

“After a loss, you’re not permitted to talk about it, but the game itself, not the outcome, gave me even more confidence that we’d have a

fantastic season. If you can play that dominantly and force them to defend for the most of the game, you have a decent chance of having a

successful season.”
