David King has told Jim White he is not yet set to return to Rangers despite being open to returning to Ibrox as chairman.
The former Gers manager has revealed that he is keen to return to Glasgow and assist rebuild the club over the next two years, after John
Bennett’s departure [Chris Jack, 15 September].
Although King has stated that this is still the case, he admits that no return is imminent at this time, despite wanting a decision made
sooner rather than later because the club is “in crisis”.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (16 September, 12:05), White said: “Can you bring us up to date straight away?
“Are you returning to the football club, possibly for a short period of time? “What is the situation, Dave?”
King responded, “The scenario does not indicate that I will return. What I’ve done is made myself available, and the reason for that is that,
while it was unsurprising to me that John [Bennett] stepped down because I’ve been in fairly regular contact with him, I really understand
the impact that being the chairman of Rangers at this time has had on him, and I just hope he’s doing well.
“I understand how difficult it is to be Rangers’ chairman at any moment, let alone in this difficult situation. Given John’s resignation, I
would have expected someone from the board to step up.
“When I learned that the board had decided to go outside and headhunt for a chairman and CEO, I realized that the job at Rangers is very
different from trading a public business.
“The club is currently in trouble, the level of which I do not know; only those within do. However, operational concerns inside Rangers
present a hurdle.
“I figured if no one stepped up, we’d have to make an external city appointment, which I’m certain would not move the club ahead. But, as
the largest stakeholder, perhaps I could step up for a while.
“I’ve announced that I am available to do it. I believe something must happen shortly. The club lacks leadership in all facets of its
operations.
Will Dave King return to Rangers after John Bennett Ibrox exit?
King has been quite open about his desire to return to Glasgow, but it is unclear whether the powers that be at Ibrox are interested in
bringing him back.
The Light Blues currently lack leadership, both on and off the field, and a reorganization is required sooner rather than later so that
Philippe Clement has some support above him at the club.
Whether it’s King, a different chairman, or even a new CEO, an appointment needs to be made quickly. The Gers are miles behind Celtic at
the present, and they need someone in charge who can close the gap.
Hopefully, the club will make a decision sooner rather than later, so that there are people above Clement who are willing to make difficult
decisions and restore some sense of normalcy to the blue half of Glasgow.
