Ex-West Ham striker Dean Ashton hits out at Leeds United summer signing after Burnley setback

Dean Ashton, an ex-West Ham striker, criticizes Leeds United’s summer signing following Burnley’s defeat.

Luca Koleosho’s 18th-minute goal broke Leeds United’s undefeated league start.

Pundit Dean Ashton chastised Leeds United full-back Jayden Bogle for poor defending in the buildup to Burnley’s victory at Elland Road. Luca Koleosho scored a sensational first-half breakaway goal as the Clarets handed the Whites their first Championship loss of the season.

Neither summer signing Bogle or goalkeeper Ilian Meslier covered themselves in glory for the 18th minute strike, as Koleosho superbly capitalised on an error by Manor Solomon. On talkSPORT, Ashton stated that “Bogle had a dilemma for the goal.” Is he going to the ball or holding his position so Anthony does not receive it?

“I’m sorry, but at certain point you have to come over as Bogle and put pressure on the ball. He doesn’t do that; instead, he merely hangs back and lets Koleosho enter the penalty area, giving him time to select his place.

United dominated for lengthy stretches and generated several opportunities, but lacked poise in the final third. Ashton felt Daniel Farke’s team was denied a penalty in the first half after Solomon went down under a tackle from Joe Worrall.

“It should’ve been [a penalty] because nowadays you certainly can’t go through the back of a player to get the ball and that’s exactly what Worrall did against Solomon,” laughed Ashton.

“He [Worrall] kicked the back of his calf away and then got a touch on the ball, to me it was a really clear penalty, very very surprised that the officials and the referee didn’t give it.”
