The Wolves explain when they first scouted Carlos Forbs and why they were unable to sign him in 2023.
It is common in Wolves transfers for a player to join the club seemingly out of nowhere, only to discover later that the club has been following such player for quite some time.
Wolves tend to conduct research on potential targets before making a decision, and Forbs is no exception.
Forbs may have played only one season of senior football in his career.
However, Wolves’ interest dates much deeper than last season, when he played for Ajax. In reality, it has been over five years since the club first recognized him.
The club says their first report on Forbs came in February 2020, when he was playing for Portugal’s U16s. However, ‘he was already highly thought of at City’ at the time. Wolves then proceeded to watch him.
Wolves’ interest was piqued again when Forbs produced outstanding figures in the Manchester City academy in 2020/21, and the idea was to be ready to make an offer if the chance occurred.
The city did not make Forbs accessible for a transfer until the summer of 2023. Wolves claim that, while they were still interested at the time, they lacked the finances to proceed further.
Wolves allege City demanded a price they couldn’t afford while they challenged PSR restrictions.
Forbs is certainly popular at Wolves.
These scouting reports are usually informative, especially when the team discloses when a player was initially recognized.
It is evident that Wolves have long appreciated Forbs, which is encouraging. It is not as if Wolves panicked and signed any available winger to replace Neto.
Even though he came late in the day, Forbs’ signing seemed to have been carefully considered.
Wolves fans will now be hoping that he meets expectations. This week, football icon Marco van Basten expressed worry about Forbs’ potential fit with Wanderers.
But Forbs will try to prove him wrong and demonstrate why Wolves have long appreciated him.
