Sheffield Wednesday, Watford evidence may cause Plymouth Argyle to regret their transfer: View.

Nathanael Ogbeta 1920

Plymouth Argyle made Nathanael Ogbeta their first acquisition of the Wayne Rooney era earlier this summer, after the left-back was released by Swansea City.

After Mickel Miller departed the club during the off-season, the Greens needed replacements in their wide defensive positions. Bali Mumba was the other option on the left side.

However, with the 24/25 season still less than a month old, the choice to bring the former Manchester City player to the club appears perplexing, given his poor performances in the first six games of the season.

Despite displaying flashes of quality when in possession, the defender’s lack of awareness might cost Argyle throughout the season, with the summer transfer already seeming like a bad decision.

Nathanael Ogbeta’s Plymouth Argyle career is off to a sluggish start following the Sheffield Wednesday horror show.

The Green Army had high expectations for the season opener against Sheffield Wednesday, but their hopes were dashed after 90 minutes at Hillsborough Stadium.

The Pilgrims looked like a rabbit in headlights as the hosts continued to surge forward, with a number of players seeming out of place as they made their competitive debuts for the club.

Ogbeta was one of those performers who didn’t shine during the opening weekend, with the 23-year-old playing for less than an hour on the left side before being replaced by Mumba.

Ibrahim Cissoko, the former Shrewsbury Town defender, failed to control the Owls’ offensive threats, allowing passes from wide areas into the penalty area, leading to Jamal Lowe’s opening.

After such a shaky start in a green jersey, it was no surprise that the defender was dropped from the starting lineup for the following weekend’s match against Hull City, and he has appeared in only a few of league games thereafter.

QPR and Watford performances will have done little to convince Wayne Rooney into recalling Nathanael Ogbeta.

Ogbeta has only played three minutes of league football since his performance in Yorkshire. His late appearance helped Argyle get a draw against Queens Park Rangers, despite finishing with nine men after Adam Forshaw and Freddie Issaka were sent off.

In Tuesday, Rooney played a complete 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup against Watford. However, the defender struggled against Championship opponents, as the Hornets won 2-0.

The ex-Peterborough United loanee’s limitless enthusiasm may make him a threat in possession, but he has been regularly caught in possession while crossing the halfway line, causing promising opportunities to be ruined quickly.

When your team is already expected to suffer this season, the last thing you need is a player who is frequently deficient in positional awareness, allowing opponents to gain headway down their right flank.

With Brendan Galloway also being selected as an alternative on the left side when Argyle are seeking to shore up their defense, Ogbeta’s playing minutes already appear like they will be restricted this season, with his lack of Championship quality evident from the start.
