Rudy Gestede reveals how Blackburn Rovers used £10m Sammie Szmodics money

Rudy Gestede has revealed that Blackburn Rovers weren’t able to use the £10 million fee that they agreed with Ipswich Town for the sale of Sammie Szmodics.

Some believed that if the Irish international attacker departed Ewood Park, the team would slip into relegation. After all, it was only Szmodics’ spectacular season that kept them in contention the last time out.

Even with his prolific goalscoring record, he needed to score two more on the penultimate day of the season, away at champions Leicester City, to ensure Blackburn’s survival.

Ipswich worked hard with Rovers on a deal for Szmodics. They demanded £20 million for him, but eventually agreed on a £10 million deal, just in time for him to make his Premier League debut against Liverpool in Town’s first game back in the top level.

The proceeds from the sales of him and Adam Wharton in January are expected to bring the club £30 million.

Following these completed transactions, Blackburn has not hesitated to spend this summer. They purchased Yuki Ohashi, Makhtar Gueye, and Todd Cantwell before the window closed on August 30th, although they were unable to spend as much as they would have liked, according to their head of football operations.

Rudy Gestede on how Blackburn spent the Sammie Szmodcis money

Speaking to the club’s channel, Rovers TV, the former player turned front office operator said that the £10 million package agreed upon for the 28-year-old’s sale was not entirely accessible for Blackburn this summer.

“We used a bit of money from the transfers we made but we have to understand that just because a player is sold for £10million, we have £10m to spend,” Gestede told the BBC.

“We don’t have the whole money up front; we all need to recognize that. There are also Financial Fair Play laws that we must obey. It’s how we can best manage things throughout the transfer window, whether due to salary constraints or FFP.

“We’ve been able to spend some money to sign talented players.” We have the owners’ full support, and the board has placed its trust in us in this process.

The Frenchman returned to Ewood Park in mid-June, following an embarrassing season of recruitment for Blackburn, which included missing out on striker target Duncan McGuire because they saved the paperwork required to complete the transfer instead of sending it to the EFL, causing them to miss the signing deadline, according to The Athletic.

That occurred in January, and Gestede is now focusing on the next winter window.

“My current responsibilities include preparing and planning for the future transfer windows, as well as ensuring that everyone is on the same page. Examine the other departments’ ability to support the initial team.

“There’s always room for improvement. I would like to increase our recruitment, travel, and a few other areas. We have a fantastic staff to sit down and talk.”

A noticeable change has happened since Rudy Gestede’s return

Blackburn has had a fairly successful summer in terms of recruitment. In Ohashi, they discovered a jewel that struck the ground running and made an immediate impression. They have also brought in great experience in the form of Andi Weimann, who will be long remembered by Rovers fans as a result of his volley against Burnley.

However, transactions like as those for Ohashi, Gueye, and goalkeeper Balazs Toth would not have been made under the previous government in football.

Rovers’ performance has become sharper since Gestede returned to Lancashire.
