However, one pre-season moment drew more attention than any other.

In a match against RCD Mallorca, West Brom midfielder Jayson Molumby was sent off for hitting Samu Costa. The event received extensive coverage, and the Irishman was penalized as a result.

The Baggies punished him £16,000 for his wrongdoing, and Malumby has now spoken out exactly how the event occurred.

According to The Irish News, the former Brighton and Millwall player stated that his actions sprang from despair and fury following a lengthy injury layoff. Molumby maintained it was an out-of-character incident and admitted his mistake.

“It had been building up for six or seven months before then.

“There’s a lot of resentment and fury. Obviously, I didn’t conduct myself well there and was likely going through a terrible moment. It’s clearly not something I’m proud of, but I’m just human. I have feelings as well, and I can only raise my hands when I am incorrect.

“Ask anyone.” Off the pitch, I’m not an aggressive guy at all; I’m fairly calm and easygoing, but I believe I just switch into competitive mode when I cross the line.”

There’s no denying that 2024 has been a tough year for Molumby. He suffered an injury-plagued second half of the 2023/24 season and has had a difficult journey back to full health.

As a result, given the competitive and aggressive style of his game, it’s not unexpected that things erupted, albeit few would have predicted it in such a way during pre-season.

Nonetheless, that is the past, and Molumby is determined to maintain his spot in the starting XI at The Hawthorns.

He has started all four games and scored his first and sixth goals for West Brom in the previous match. Corberan’s team defeated Swansea City 1-0 at home, thanks to Molumby’s key strike.

International prospects

Molumby has not played for the Republic of Ireland since November 2023 due to an injury. However, he has returned to the squad for the international break.

West Brom’s new manager, Heimir Hallgrimsson, will be eager to re-establish his place in the team.

Before his injury, Molumby had established himself as a regular, and with a strong start to the season, he may find himself in the starting lineup.
