Dan Neil has spoken at length about Jack Clarke’s move to Ipswich Town in the Premier League
Dan Neil has explained how the Sunderland locker room reacted to Jack Clarke’s departure.
The former Tottenham and Leeds United winger was signed by Ipswich Town in the Premier League during the summer window for a fee of roughly £20 million plus a 15% sell-on clause.
Last season, Sunderland relied heavily on the 23-year-old for goals and assists, with Clarke contributing 19 goals as the Black Cats ended 16th in the Championship under interim manager Mike Dodds.
However, Sunderland team captain Neil claims he has no objections to Clarke’s move to the Premier League and complimented the club for getting it right in the transfer market during recent windows, with left-winger Romaine Mundle ready to step in.
“It was definitely a difficult one to take. First and foremost, I believe he was a bright individual. “He got along with everyone and was a pleasure to have in the dressing room,” Clarke said BBC Radio 5 Live. “But, as a footballer, he was a bit of a maverick in our team last year and the year before, so anything might happen when you give Jack the ball.
“You saw that last year with his goal contributions, but I believe he deserves to transfer to the Premier League. I don’t think anyone was upset that he left and went to the Premier League since we all knew he deserved it and should test himself in the Premier League.
“I think, credit to the club, we brought Romain Mundle in January, and he’s been one of the finest players in preseason for me in training. And if Jack Clarke stayed, he might not have had the opportunity. But Romaine stepped in and seized the opportunity. He scored twice against Burnley and Portsmouth.
“We signed Wilson on loan from Zenit and a few other players, so there’s plenty of competition for that spot. But, as I already stated, Jack deserved that move, and we had no problem seeing him go. We simply wish him the best.”
