Manager banishes Leicester City transfer target as he slams his ‘ambition’

During the summer transfer window, Steven Bergwijn was strongly linked to a move to the King Power Stadium; nevertheless, he ultimately completed a £17.6 million move to Saudi Arabia.

This season, Steven Bergwijn may have been on the Leicester City roster. Instead, the Dutch winger was expelled from his country’s squad and sent to Saudi Arabia.

During the summer, Bergwijn was connected to several offensive players, including City. A few weeks before the transfer market closed, rumors from the Netherlands indicated that the 26-year-old’s most probable destination as he prepared to depart Ajax was the King Power Stadium. But a transfer did not happen, and Bergwijn really required Saudi Arabia’s later transfer deadline to secure his transfer, arriving at Al-Ittihad on Monday for £17.6 million.

Even if a number of the most well-known players in the game have moved to the Middle East in recent years, there are still questions about the caliber of the leagues there. When overseas managers choose their teams, that’s an issue.

For instance, after doing well in his cameos at the summer’s European Championship, Ivan Toney, who finalized a move to Al-Ahli last week, is not included in the England team for their next Nations League fixtures. He hasn’t been completely ruled out of further call-ups, either.

Bergwijn, meanwhile, has been unquestionable. He started two games as the Netherlands advanced to the semifinals in Germany. Ronald Koeman, the head coach of the Netherlands, was direct in his assessment of the winger’s future with his country.

“At the age of 26, Steven Bergwijn moves to Saudi Arabia. “It’s evident that this is unrelated to athletic aspirations,” Koeman stated during a news conference on Tuesday. “The Dutch national team’s book is closed. I think he already knows what I would have said.

Rather of pursuing Bergwijn, City expanded their pool of alternatives by acquiring Jordan Ayew for a reported £5 million, eventually increasing to £8 million. In the last two days of the window, Bilal El Khannouss and Odsonne Edouard arrived, completing their offensive ranks.
