Hull City’s goalkeeper transfer conundrum may be resolved by unexpected late arrival

Hull City signed two new goalkeepers in the transfer window

Hull City’s relationship with goalkeepers has recently become problematic. The much-discussed quarrel between owner Acun Ilicali and manager Liam Rosenior

over Ryan Allsop’s selection became a little too public, although after the event.

The chairman’s support for Ivor Pandur was followed by two summer arrivals, complicating selection considerations further. Former Switzerland Under-21

international goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi joined following an agreement with Young Boys, which allowed the 25-year-old to sign a three-year contract.

With Thimothee Lo-Tutala and Harvey Cartwright already on the roster, City had a new trio that appeared to provide adequate coverage and competition in the

goalkeeping department. On transfer deadline day, four became five when the Tigers seized the opportunity to sign Brighton & Hove Albion keeper Carl Rushworth

on a season-long loan.

Rushworth, a former England under-21 keeper who played every minute of last season’s Championship campaign while on loan at Swansea City, comes to the MKM

Stadium with no assurances but the clear expectation that he can earn and hold the number one spot for the rest of the season.

“I want to play, and knowing there was interest and how the team plays in possession, it will favour me and my attributes,” Rushworth said when asked about his

instant thoughts on joining with the club.

The 23-year-old from Halifax complements City manager Tim Walter’s approach, maybe more than his four rivals for the number one shirt, and he’s eager to

highlight his strongest talents to help City climb the league.

“I’ll bring energy and feed off the fans,” Rushworth explains. “One of my strengths is my in-possession game, as well as my shot-stopping ability. The boss wants me

to play mixed football – really good from the back, but also understand that if there are advantages higher up the pitch, playing one ball into the final third is

preferable.”

Rushworth, who was only signed on deadline day, was not in the team for Saturday’s defeat by Leeds United, but is anticipated to be included in the squad for the

Tigers’ home game against Sheffield United on Friday, September 13. Will he be in the starting XI?
