Graeme Souness Insists Rangers Must Find £50 Million for Four Players to Close Gap on Celtic
Rangers legend Graeme Souness has voiced his belief that the Ibrox club must make a significant financial investment if they are serious about closing the gap on Celtic and reclaiming dominance in Scottish football. According to Souness, a £50 million outlay is necessary for Rangers to secure four top-quality players capable of elevating the team to the next level.
Souness, who managed Rangers during a transformative period in the late 1980s, emphasized the need for the club to be bold and proactive in the transfer market. In his view, Celtic’s recent success, including multiple Scottish Premiership titles and domestic cups, is not a temporary phase, but rather the result of a well-structured approach, both financially and strategically. To match Celtic’s consistency, Souness believes Rangers must up their game significantly.
Souness broke down his vision for how Rangers can close the gap on Celtic, advocating for the recruitment of four key players, each costing around £12-15 million. The goal would be to bring in talent capable of making an immediate impact, both in domestic competition and on the European stage.
“Celtic have a very settled side, a strong manager, and a system that works,” Souness explained. “For Rangers to compete consistently, they need to go out and spend serious money on quality. This isn’t about spending for the sake of it, but about getting four players who can walk into the first team and make a difference.”

A commanding centre-back to pair with Connor Goldson or serve as an upgrade is vital, particularly to shore up a defence that has shown vulnerability at key moments.
Rangers would benefit from a creative winger or attacking midfielder who can provide assists, score goals, and offer width, something that has been a weakness compared to Celtic’s depth in these areas.
Souness acknowledged that £50 million is a significant amount, but argued that without such investment, Rangers risk being left further behind their Old Firm rivals. “It’s not an easy fix, and it’s not cheap,” he said, “but if Rangers want to consistently challenge Celtic, especially in Europe, this is what it will take.”
The financial aspect is, of course, a major question. Rangers are not known for spending extravagantly, and recent signings have been more modest. However, Souness believes that creative financial planning, including potential player sales, European football revenue, and perhaps new investment, could provide the necessary resources.
Souness, who remains deeply connected to the club, made it clear that the Rangers board must take decisive action. He highlighted that Celtic’s success is based on a solid foundation of smart recruitment, managerial stability, and long-term planning—elements Rangers must emulate to compete at the highest level.
“If Rangers don’t invest now, the gap will only get wider,” he warned. “Celtic are not going to slow down, so Rangers have to speed up.”
