The talkSPORT analyst and former striker for Aston Villa was present at Parkhead.
Gabby Agbonlahor has spoken up about his journey to Glasgow for Celtic’s victory over Rangers, including the small amount of money he took home.
In the opening encounter between the fierce rivals this season, Brendan Rodgers’ team easily defeated Philippe Clement’s team 3-0 at Parkhead, with the legendary Aston Villa supporter captured on camera in the stands. The goals came from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, and team captain Callum McGregor, giving the Hoops a four-point lead in the league. Agbonlahor acknowledges that the sentiment among the fans within the stadium was that it would be a “comfortable” afternoon for Celtic, and he believes that the Rangers supporters must find it difficult to accept.
Having played in derbies south of the border, he was familiar with them, and he talked about how a Rangers supporter would feel if they were watching. John McGinn, the captain of Villa and a Scotland international, met with him at the end of his beloved journey.
To be honest, I thought it was great. My girlfriend and I attended, and everyone was really kind. It brings about a shift. There, people are amiable and engaging in stimulating conversations regarding football. I stayed at the same place as the Scotland players do, so I had a little conversation with John McGinn, the set piece coach at Aston Villa, before I left. I had a great day, made a lot of friends, and joked around with Rangers and Celtics supporters. It was quite enjoyable for me.
“I’ve watched a lot of Old Firm games and when you watch them you are like ‘oh it could have gone either way, it is close or there was tackles going in,'” he said in an interview with talkSPORT’s breakfast program. I don’t like to pick fights, but having participated in several derby matches, I can imagine that, as a Rangers supporter, I would be thinking, “They might be better than you, but give them a tackle.” Kick someone, at the very least.
Because it was so one-sided, Celtic supporters in the stadium were asking themselves, ‘Why haven’t we scored yet?’ ten minutes later. The message was “don’t worry, we will score again soon” when the goal was disallowed. There was an air of “we are going to beat these easily.” For any Rangers supporter, that must be difficult to accept.”
Agbonlahor disclosed that he gambled on the game and chose a winner. He revealed to co-host Shebahn Aherne that he placed a 15/1 wager on the Hoops to win 3-0 and that his wager paid off handsomely—£150. With prices for their home games rising as high as £97 a game, supporters have criticized Aston Villa’s pricing as “out of touch,” and he quipped it would be enough to purchase one Champions League ticket for the team.
“I had a tenner on 3-0 and it was 3-0,” he said. When it was 2-0, I told them to take their time and not score just yet. We didn’t want the third goal to come in too soon and give them a chance to score four or five. I earned £150 as I had a 15/1. That will
