Exclusive: 56-Year-Old Manager Eyes PL Job After Everton Move ‘Very Close’

Vitor Pereira, the head coach of Al-Shabab now, has exclusively told GIVEMESPORT that he is eager to test himself in the Premier League after being defeated by Frank Lampard for the Goodison Park hot seat. Everton came dangerously close to selecting Pereira as their next manager in January 2022.

After choosing to fire Rafael Benitez barely six and a half months into his tenure, Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri was searching for new energy in the dugout. The Merseyside team had only won one top division game since September due to a 2-1 loss to Norwich City.

Pereira is managing in the Saudi Pro League at the moment, but he is dreaming of making it to the English premier league after getting dangerously near three times.

Pereira Was Ready to Take Goodison Park Job

Pereira became clear as Moshiri’s favorite to take over as Everton manager in January 2022, replacing Benítez. In actuality, it was the third time in his career that he had advanced to the finals for a Premier League position.

Although Lampard was ultimately selected in his place, events may have gone differently if Everton supporters had not objected to the Portuguese tactician’s possible hiring while he was already in Merseyside conducting interviews.

“I was on the verge of joining Everton. I was prepared to begin work there,” Pereira said to GIVEMESPORT in an exclusive interview. “I traveled there and spent a week there. I met with the club four times, but ultimately it was not meant to be.

“I’ve had a long career trip thus far, and I am in

“Three times, I came very close to managing in the Premier League. Each time, little circumstances prevented it from happening, but I think I’ll be there in the future.”

Pereira is devoted to Al-Shabab and isn’t planning on looking elsewhere just yet, but if all goes according to plan in the long term, he may eventually earn his dream transfer to England with his 13th senior position in football.

Pereira Heading to Toffees with a Strong Resume
Portuguese strategist with a wealth of managerial accolades

With a wealth of trophies and international management experience under his belt, Pereira would have arrived at Everton.

The 56-year-old had most recently managed Flamengo and Corinthians in Brazil before joining Al-Shabab. Additionally, he played for Fenerbahce twice, in 2015–16 and 2021.

At Porto, he won two Portuguese Super Cups (2011) and the 2011/12 and 2012/13 Primeira Liga crowns, accounting for four of his eight managerial medals. Additionally, Pereira supported Andre Villas-Boas throughout Porto’s 2010–11 treble-winning season, which saw them win the league, the Taca de Portugal, and a Europa League trophy against Braga.

Joao Moutinho, Nicolas Otamendi, Danilo, Jackson Martinez, and James Rodríguez were among the players that Pereira was fortunate to have at Porto. These players flourished under their manager’s possession-based strategy, which was designed to trick and control opponents by often and erratically altering the game’s rhythm.

Particularly important was the center midfield, which frequently alternated between a diamond and a square formation as Pereira’s tactically brilliant players drew their rivals out of position and then waited for the ideal opportunity to attack.

After adopting this mentality, Pereira went on to win the Greek Football Cup and the Greek Super League with Olympiacos in 2014–15. Later, he moved to Shanghai SIPG in China, where he won the Chinese Super League in 2018 and the FA Super Cup in 2019.
