The cowboys’ Jerry Jones makes a significant contract claim for Dak Prescott.
The question of whether Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones wants to wed quarterback Dak Prescott permanently has been discussed a lot in 2024, especially after Prescott’s postseason record fell to 2-5 this past January.
Jones appeared on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on Wednesday night, and it appears like he talked about that subject.
Regarding a possible Prescott contract, Jones stated, “What he is as a person and as a quarterback will age well,” as reported by Christian Arnold of the New York Post.”I believe it will hold up nicely for the next five to ten years of his life. He seems like the type of quarterback who will only grow better.”
On The Athletic’s “Scoop City” podcast earlier this week, NFL insider Dianna Russini stated that “the hold up” on a Prescott deal “is the years the Cowboys are willing to commit to.” Her statement raised some eyebrows.
If the two parties can’t come to an agreement by the start of Sunday’s Week 1 game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns, fans should “expect” Prescott to play out the remainder of his current contract through the following season, according to Cowboys insider Jon Machota of The Athletic.
When Prescott signs with the Cowboys or becomes a free agent in March 2025, he is predicted to become the highest-paid player in the league.If he decides to go on the open market, he might sign a contract worth up to $70 million per year.
With regard to Prescott, Jones continued, “we have to add that to what we’re going to be paying him for the future in addition to the challenge of recouping what we have spent on him over the last four years.”Ultimately, that is the Dallas Cowboys’ problem rather than Dak’s as there won’t be enough money for supporting cast. Therefore, we must ask ourselves: Is it possible for us to achieve the kind of success that Dak, we, his teammates, and our supporters all deserve? Can we accomplish that and reach a point where we can buy Dak? I believe we can.
In any case, ESPN’s Dan Graziano stated that he “would not be surprised to see quarterback Dak Prescott sign a long-term extension with the Cowboys this week” in a piece that was released on Thursday morning.
“I’ve been getting more optimistic responses over the past couple days than I’ve gotten at any other point in the past calendar year,” Graziano continued. “While the prospect of unrestricted free agency next March certainly looks enticing, I wonder if Prescott might just decide enough is enough and that staying in Dallas for the rest of his career is his best play.”
If Machota is right, there is not much farther to go before a Prescott deal is completed.
