Trabzonspor is pursuing Sunderland deadline day target Gift Orban on a loan-to-buy deal, according to writer Sacha Tavolieri.
Sunderland were among the Championship’s busy clubs on deadline day, with manager Regis Le Bris putting the final touches on his squad.
It was a solid debut for the Frenchman at the leadership of the Wearside outfit. Despite losing star player Jack Clarke, the Black Cats have made fresh additions and retained key players like Dan Neil, Anthony Patterson, and Dan Ballard.
Of course, not all related names ended up in the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland were reportedly considering a late deal for striker Gift Orban, who has struggled since joining Lyon from KAA Gent. However, the swap did not go through, and it appears that the Nigerian is now in the running for another contract.
According to X reporter Sacha Tavolieri, Turkish club Trabzonspor is pursuing Orban on a loan-to-buy basis. Their window is still open, and they want to bring him in for a €1 million loan fee.
The €6 million required purchase option would only be exercised if Trabzonspor won the Super Lig and Orban scored more than 20 goals.
Although Sunderland’s links did not materialise, Orban may yet have an exit strategy from France.
An ambitious target
When Orban’s potential move to Sunderland first surfaced on deadline day, it seemed unlikely to happen.
The 22-year-old has not found the form he had hoped for since transferring to Lyon, but he is still regarded as a high attacking potential after tearing it up with KAA Gent in both the Jupiler Pro League and the UEFA Conference League. However, on deadline day, he scored twice off the bench for Lyon in Ligue 1.
The Black Cats eventually found a striker, signing Ahmed Abdullahi, 20, from Orban’s former club Gent. He’ll compete with Eliezer Mayenda, Wilson Isidorr, and Nazariy Rusyn for the starting berth at the top under Le Bris.
Mayenda may be the preferred option for the time being, given his great start to the season.
Deadline day deals
Despite a slow transfer period, Sunderland managed to sign a few players on deadline day.
Milan Aleksic, a Serbian prospect, lined up alongside the aforementioned striker Abdullahi. These were the two permanent additions.
They’ve added some serious talent to their loan roster, signing Premier League centre-back Chris Mepham and RC Lens defensive midfielder Salis Abdul Samed.
It is anticipated that they can assist the Black Cats retain their pristine record of four wins in as many Championship games.
