‘What you dream of as a kid’ – Woolfenden on representing Town in the Premier League

Ipswich Town: Luke Woolfenden on playing in the Premier League

The Blues earned their first point of the season on Saturday afternoon, drawing 1-1 with Fulham at Portman Road. It came after painful defeats at home to Liverpool and away to Manchester City, where they played two of the best teams in the world.

Woolfenden, who has guarded against Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland, can now claim to have faced some of Europe’s top players, a lifelong dream for the Town academy graduate.

“It’s a little strange, to be honest,” he replied. “We were promoted so swiftly, back-to-back, that it’s almost like ‘pinch yourself’ every time you go out there.

“You’re lining up for a Premier League game. It’s what you wished for as a child, so it’s genuinely unbelievable.”

Ipswich has had stretches in all three games where they dominated possession, created chances, and threatened in the attacking third. It demonstrates that they can compete on the level, which Woolfenden believes is critical.

“It’s encouraging, but it’s something we pride ourselves on,” he told me.

“We may not have the biggest names and so on, but at the end of the day, if you go out there, keep to your beliefs, and are fearless on the ball, there’s no reason you can’t dominate any club in this league.

“To be fair to the people in the stands, we concede, and it’s great that they stick with us the whole way. They stopped moaning right away. In prior years, they would have definitely done or gotten on our backs, but I believe they recognize what we’re doing and how far we’ve gone.

“The only way we’re going to win in this league is if everyone sticks together and keeps going. No matter what the setback is, we must stick together and keep moving forward.”
