West Brom ace who left on a free is now worth even more than Johnston
On deadline day, West Bromwich Albion secured a fantastic deal to bring back former loan star Mikey Johnston permanently, adding the cherry on top of their already impressive transfer window.
As the clock ticked down on another eye-catching piece of business, Mason Holgate also joined on loan, with the now-former Celtic winger ending up costing the Baggies a fair £3 million.
Carlos Corberan’s team could be even more of a force to be reckoned with in the Championship if he can replicate the success he had as a fan favourite at the Hawthorns last season. The Baggies have not yet suffered a loss in their opening four league games.
Johnston’s time at West Brom
In an attempt to assist Corberan’s team qualify for and remain in the play-offs, Johnston arrived on loan in January. The Republic of Ireland international made an immediate impression on his new surroundings by playing down the left wing.
With a blistering drive forward and a deadly finish that generally found the back of the net, the 25-year-old would twist and turn second-tier defences for joy. Johnston helped himself to an astonishing seven goals and two assists from 20 Baggies outings.
Thus, West Brom couldn’t pass up the chance to attempt and re-sign Johnson when it presented itself during the just completed transfer window.
With Tom Fellows also operating as a creative machine down the right, with three assists already tallied up from his side’s opening four Championship contests, both the homegrown West Brom menace and the £3m new boy could tear up the league together.
While West Brom was thrilled to have Johnstone back, his subsequent £10 million departure to Wolverhampton Wanderers would have been especially discouraging.

Instead of being ecstatic about Johnstone’s homecoming, West Brom would have been especially demoralised by his recent £10 million sale to Wolverhampton Wanderers.d goodbye to the new Wolves goalkeeper for nothing back in 2022.
With the majority of his career clean sheets coming in the second division, Corberan has shown himself to be a dependable shot-blocker throughout his playing days. He would want to be able to use Johnstone in his current West Brom starting lineup.
Given that West Ham United is rumoured to have bid £10 million for Johnstone’s services in 2021, the Baggies wouldn’t be filled with such remorse if they were able to sell him on for a high price when they could.
But instead of making money, West Brom resisted an offer and eventually turned it down. As a result, the four-time England international left the building for free, and his team finished in an unsatisfying mid-table position.
Now, the ex-Red Devils youngster is worth £7m more than statement buy Johnston, as the Baggies remain a team in the second tier aiming for a top-flight return.
Although Corberan currently has Alex Palmer, who has allowed just two goals in the league so far this season, in goal, some connected to West Brom must still question whether Johnstone’s tenure with the team could have ended more favourably.
