Stefan Borson: Celtic have ‘Enormous’ advantage over Rangers after confirmed deal

Celtic had a huge lead over Rangers after qualifying for the Champions League and profiting handsomely from Matt O’Riley’s sale to Brighton.

According to finance expert Stefan Borson, qualifying for European football’s premier club championship annually accounts for a “massive” portion of Celtic’s revenue.

Brendan Rodgers’ squad qualified for the Champions League after winning the Scottish Premiership last season.

However, Rangers were eliminated from the Champions League after being defeated by Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv in the third qualifying round, forcing them to settle for a spot in the Europa League.

Celtic’s profits have also been boosted by O’Riley’s move to Brighton for an initial fee of £25 million, with potential add-ons raising the total to roughly £30 million.

Celtic are in strong financial position after Matt O’Riley deal

Borson said that money and Champions League revenue will assure the Glasgow giants’ financial stability this season.

Borson told Football Insider that the Champions League is the most important thing for Celtic each year.

“It simply outperforms all other revenue streams. It is really significant, especially given that you may purchase ten games and earn up to £50 million.

“It’s a significant portion of their revenue and profit, especially when you’re the only team receiving it and the Rangers aren’t.

“It’s a huge benefit, and you can add to that the O’Riley sale to Brighton.

“But because the Champions League is almost a recurring revenue source, it’s the more important one.

“But obviously, when you make a massive win like £30 million on a single transfer, it’s amazing.

“You would expect them to be investing that in the side because, with Champions League, they are in a good position.”
