Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is back with the Brazil squad for the South America World Cup qualifiers this month. Guimaraes has arrived in Brazil to train in preparation for his country’s upcoming qualifying matches. The five-time world champions host Ecuador at the Couto Pereira Stadium in Curitiba on Saturday before travelling to Paraguay next Wednesday.
In preparation for the match, Brazil have been training at Athletico Paranaense’s training ground in Curitiba this week. It marks something of a homecoming for Guimaraes, who made over 100 appearances for Athletico Paranaense before joining Olympique Lyonnais in 2020.

Guimaraes will be hoping to add to his 26 Brazil caps during the international break and end a difficult run of results. Brazil have won just one of their last eight competitive matches and have lost each of their last three in qualifying, leaving them sitting sixth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying group out of 10 teams.
Guimaraes joins the Brazil squad having been named Newcastle’s new ‘team captain’ for the 2024-25 season. The 26-year-old has led The Magpies out in each of their opening three Premier League games as they have enjoyed their best three-game start to a season in over a decade. “It’s another dream come true to be captain of a club where I love to be,” Guimaraes said. “When the fans love me it’s always massive for me.”
