Travis Kelce attends the CMT Awards at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.
It all began before the AFC Championship Game, while Tucker was warming up. He happened to be on the Chiefs side of the field.
Kelce approached Tucker’s equipment and helmet and hurled it rather far away. Both Patrick Mahomes and Kelce later blamed Tucker for the confrontation, which was extensively chronicled at the time. Here is what Mahomes and Kelce said:
“He does that little stuff, I think to try to get under our skin,” Mahomes told reporters. “I asked him to shift his belongings. He stood up and pushed it about two inches, but not far enough to clear the path. I was going to let it slip, but Travis stepped in and moved it for me.
“After that, I wasn’t going to let him put it back down. I hold him in high regard as a player; he is one of the finest kickers of all time, if not the best. But at the same time, you must respect each team, and we all share the field in a courteous manner.”
Justin Tucker set up on the Chiefs’ side of the field. Kickers have been doing this on purpose for years, hoping to annoy.
Kelce and Mahomes did the right thing by discarding his stuff. Should have thrown it farther. Play silly games and get ridiculous
Tucker answered by explaining that he did not try to do anything improper and had no intention of bothering the opposition squad. He said that he has been doing this for the whole of his career and has never had a problem with any opposition squad or players:
“I’m completely prepared to let it all go, but I just wanted to clarify that this is what I’ve done for the past 12 years, and I’m not out there trying to be difficult. I’m simply out there getting ready for the football game, like they are. That’s all I have to say about it, just to be clear.
It’s difficult to determine who was right and who was wrong, but one thing is certain: these teams do not like one other.
Justin Tucker refuses to discuss Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
