A second season of Championship competition resulted in a significant summer roster turnover for Leeds United.
Leeds signed eight new players in total to replace the twenty-one that left Elland Road during a period when they were clearing out a lot of deadwood and losing important players.
After playing a key role in Leeds’ championship run the previous season, Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter left to join the Premier League, where they helped generate over £100 million in revenue.
Ao Tanaka, Largie Ramazani, and Manor Solomon appear to be the acquisitions that will make Leeds competitive once more, even though just a small portion of that money has been used to rebuild the team.
In light of this, the starting lineup for Leeds’ matchup against Hull City on Saturday is compared to the lineup from the 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, which occurred precisely a year ago.
Starting XI vs Sheffield Wednesday (September 2023)
Illan Meslier: £5 million
Luke Ayling: £200k
Joe Rodon: Loan
Pascal Struijk: Free
Jamie Shackleton: Academy
Ethan Ampadu: £7 million
Archie Gray: Academy
Crysencio Summerville: £1.3 million
Joel Piroe: £10.5 million
Wilfried Gnonto: £3.8 million
Georginio Rutter: £25 million (initial fee)
Total cost: £52.8 million
Starting XI vs Hull City (On Saturday)
Illan Meslier: £5 million
Jayden Bogle: £5 million
Joe Rodon: £10 million
Pascal Struijk: Free
Junior Firpo: £12 million
Ethan Ampadu: £7 million
Ilia Gruev: £5 million
Manor Solomon: Loan
Brenden Aaronson: £25 million
Wilfried Gnonto: £3.8 million
Mateo Joseph: £900k
Total cost: £73.7 million
Hull City vs. Leeds starting lineup will cost £20.9 million extra.
Considering the depth of skill lost during the summer, it is actually quite remarkable to see the starting lineup versus the Tigers from more than a year ago.
Nevertheless, considering how little they cost, it demonstrates the excellent job Leeds has done over the past 12 months in assisting Gray and Summerville in becoming the players they are today.
Six moves also highlight how rapidly things may change in the Championship following a lack of promotion, as Premier League teams are always ready to intervene when success falters.
Of course, since Joe Rodon’s transfer became a permanent agreement, the outcomes are a little skewed. A year ago, Junior Firpo was still a member of the club, albeit with an injury.
Leeds does not currently have any academy graduates in their starting lineup, which is sad. However, in a few years, Charlie Crew and Harry Gray will be making an impact. The closest is Pascal Struijk, who was signed by Ajax.
This comparison does demonstrate, however, that despite his losses, Daniel Farke still has a club that has the potential to earn automatic promotion, especially with Dan James ($25 million), Joel Piroe ($10.5 million), Max Wober ($11 million), and Largie Ramazani ($6.5 million) in reserve.
