A former Charlton Athletic, Watford, and Newcastle United player is being mentioned for the League Two management position.
The former goalkeeper has impressed with his performances at Gateshead thus far.
Rob Elliot, a former Charlton Athletic and Watford goalkeeper, is expected to take over Carlisle United’s League Two managing position after Paul Simpson left.
58-year-old Simpson’s club was demoted from League One last season, and this year’s campaign has begun with three defeats in the first four games. Simpson suffered a deadly blow last weekend with a 2-1 home loss to Tranmere Rovers, who also lost nine of their final ten home games last season.
Carlisle United released a statement on Saturday confirming that manager Paul Simpson has left the club immediately.
“Gavin Skelton, Billy Barr, and Jake Simpson have also left.” Mark Birch, Steven Rudd, and Jamie Devitt will take interim command of the first team until the club begins its recruitment process.
“Everyone at the club would want to thank Paul and his crew for their efforts while at Brunton Park. An additional update will be supplied early next week.
A number of names have already been mentioned as potential alternatives for Simpson, who is in need of an improvement in his form. According to The News & Star, former Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe and ex-Barrow coach Pete Wild are among the probable replacements.
Another name being touted as a front-runner for the position is one that Charlton Athletic and Watford fans will recognize. Elliot came up through the Addicks’ development program and spent seven years with the senior squad, appearing in 109 games.
