An explanation from an ex-referee on Blackburn Rovers’ striker’s dismissal against Burnley
An explanation on Blackburn Rovers’ striker’s dismissal versus Burnley provided by an ex-referee
Despite being fouled by Maxime Esteve, the 26-year-old was given a second yellow card during the East Lancashire derby on Saturday, leading to an odd dismissal.
Gueye was given his marching orders for waving an imaginary card at the player in the middle, even though he had won the freekick for his team. This suggests that Esteve should have received further punishment.
However, Rovers had to play for more than thirty minutes with ten men, and Gueye was ordered to take an early bath.
Despite having one less player, Scott Parker’s team was unable to overcome Blackburn’s determination and were forced to settle for a painful 1-1 draw.
Speaking on the event on Sky Sports’ “Behind The Whistle” program, former referee Chris Foy stated that Harrington had no other option.
He clarified, “Clubs were reminded ahead of the current season that visibly waving for an opponent player to obtain a yellow card will be viewed as unsportsmanlike behaviour and that the player making the gesture would receive a yellow card.
“He makes an obvious motion to the referee after Blackburn Rovers’ No. 9 is fouled, suggesting that Burnley’s No. 5 be given a yellow card. He subsequently does this multiple times.
“As he is already on a yellow card, the referee has no choice here but to produce a second yellow and subsequent red card.”
