According to Aris Limassol manager Aleksey Shpilevsky, Connor Goldson declined a lucrative offer from former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard to join him in Saudi Arabia.
Goldson departed Rangers last month in a £1.5 million deal to join ambitious Aris in Cyprus, amid reports of interest from ex-Ibrox manager Gerrard, who now manages Al-Ettifaq.
And Aris’ Belarussian manager, Shpilevsky, has complimented the 31-year-old, who is presently sidelined for a few weeks due to a knee injury, for resisting the draw of the Saudi millions.
He stated, “Connor Goldson is one of the most significant transfers in Aris and Cypriot football history.”
“I chatted with him first after our match against Rangers in Limassol, and he was really humble.
“But I didn’t think we’d ever get Goldson.
“When we originally approached him about coming here, one of his first enquiries was whether we had a team ready to compete for medals.
“Connor Goldson turned down Saudi Arabia and working with his old manager Steven Gerrard in preference of coming to Aris for a lower salary.
“It demonstrates how determined he is to win here.
“And so far, the transition has gone well. You can see how good he is during training, and he is also extremely good at assisting the younger players.”
