McGregor, who participated in Euro 2024 and gained 63 caps for Scotland, stated that he had come to a difficult decision and that it had been “a huge honour” to serve his nation.
“I feel like I made the right decision at the right time, even though it was extremely difficult,” McGregor remarked.
It was crucial that I told Steve what I was about to do, and I did just that this week. I simply felt that the timing was right for me to stop playing international football, as I mentioned to Steve.
It has been an enormous honor to reach 63 caps for my nation; even if making an appearance just once would have been a dream come true, I could only have imagined as a little child what it would have been like to reach 63 and be inducted into the Roll of Honour at 50 caps.
“My goal throughout my career has been to always be available for Scotland, to be chosen whenever possible, to give the nation everything I can, and to proudly and passionately represent the supporters.”
“My career has included a significant amount of international football, where I have learnt a great deal and reached some amazing highs—that historic night in Serbia being among the best—and have been fortunate to share these experiences with some amazing individuals.
Scoring at Hampden in the Euros in front of our incredible supporters will always be a personal highlight for me. Playing for Scotland has always meant so much to me. Reaching two big championships will also always be a source of true pride.
It has been an honor to play for my country on such a platform and to represent my country for such a long time, even if, like many others, I wish we could have advanced further in these events.
After making his debut for the national team in 2017, McGregor helped them qualify for Euro 2020, ending their lengthy banishment from major competitions. In the third group stage match, the midfielder scored against Croatia while participating in all three of those finals. Additionally, he started all three of the Euros this summer.
“I have worked with some excellent managers, teammates and staff and I thank them all for their incredible efforts during the time we have had together,” McGregor said.
“I would like to wish Steve, the current Scotland players and all the players who follow me nothing but success for the future.
“I also want to give special and sincere thanks to the Scotland fans who have supported me so brilliantly during my time. The level of passion and commitment which our fans bring is second to none and something which I will always remember.”
Scotland coach Steve Clarke praised McGregor’s contribution to the side and said that he will be missed.
“Callum’s consistency of performance and leadership qualities have been a real catalyst in the team’s return to major tournaments,” Clarke said.
“He has been a driving force in the middle of the park and in many ways is a coach’s dream: he is low maintenance, leads by example and sets the highest standards every day in training and in matches.
“That professionalism and dedication has been a huge influence in our squad. We had a very good chat and while I am disappointed to lose Callum’s qualities I can understand the rationale behind his decision.
“He will be missed by his teammates, the coaches, the backroom staff and, of course, the fans. I would like to thank him for all that he has contributed and helped us achieve.”
