Callum McGregor retires from international football

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has declared his retirement from international football.

Callum has represented his country at all international youth levels for the past 16 years, and over the last seven years has been an integral part of the Scotland team, earning 63 international caps, scoring three goals, and playing a key role in helping the national team win back-to-back European Championships.

Callum McGregor stated: “I made a very difficult decision, but one that I believe is the correct one at the right moment.

“It was critical that I communicate with Steve, which I did this week, to inform him of my intentions. As I told Steve, I just thought it was time for me to move on from international football.

“It has been a big honour to win 63 caps for my nation, as appearing even once would have been a dream come true, but to win 63 and be inducted into the Roll of Honour at 50 caps is something I could only have imagined as a little boy.

“Throughout my career, I wanted to be available for Scotland at all times and whenever called upon, to do everything possible to help the country and to represent the supporters with passion and pride.”

“International football has been a very significant part of my career, where I have learnt so much and reached fantastic heights, with that legendary night in Serbia being one of the best, and I have been fortunate to share these moments with some wonderful individuals.

“Playing for Scotland has always meant a lot to me, and winning two major championships will always be a source of great pride for me, with scoring at Hampden in front of our incredible fans being a personal highlight.

“Of course, like many others, I wish we had progressed further in these events, but it has been a privilege to play for my nation on such a grand scale and to represent my country for so long.

“I’ve worked with several fantastic bosses, teammates, and staff, and I’d like to thank them all for their amazing efforts during our time together.

“I wish Steve, the current Scotland players, and all of the players that follow me nothing but success in the future.

“I’d also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Scotland’s fans for their unwavering support throughout my career. Our supporters’ level of enthusiasm and loyalty is unparalleled, and it is something I will never forget.
