Aston Villa are ready to “cash in on” Diego Carlos once Fulham submit a “serious” offer for his services, according to Alan Hutton.
Throughout the summer transfer season, the defender has been linked to Villa Park; according to sources, the Villans are eager to cut his £100,000-per-week salary [The Telegraph, 20 May].
Although the initial offer for the Brazilian has now been turned down by Marco Silva’s team, the Cottagers are anticipated to come back with a fresh offer while the teams continue to negotiate [David Ornstein, 9 August].
Hutton believes Emery has enough depth at center defense to let Carlos go, even though he is unsure of the kind of price Villa would demand before approving his departure.
Hutton exclusively told Villa News, “I think the manager might look to move him on.”
He’s currently 31 years old, and when he first joined, I had a lot of expectations for him. I assumed he would play frequently, but he had a terrible injury that kept him out for a while.
“At the moment, I believe Villa has options at center back.”
Tyrone Mings is expected to return, [Ezri] Konsa has shown a lot of strength, and Pau Torres has performed admirably, so I believe they have insurance there.
“I believe the club would try to profit from it if a solid offer were to come in.
“I believe there is flexibility in that center-back position, but I’m not sure what the fair fee would be.”
Diego Carlos to exit Aston Villa amid Fulham transfer rumours?
If Carlos leaves before the transfer market closes at the end of August, the Villans will have more than enough talented options in the center of defense to handle his absence, as Hutton says.
But with the Premier League season coming up and Champions League games now on the schedule, Emery might need to bring in one or two more players to get his backline ready for the heavier burden.
Ideally, Carlos’ sale will allow Emery and his recruiting staff to spend any proceeds on a new defensive signing before to the start of the upcoming campaign. In this manner, they will have covered all the bases.
