Derek McInnes discusses what he found “bizarre” after seeing Celtic defeat Kilmarnock on August 4, 2024, at 20:10. Patrick Sinat

The victory over Kilmarnock on the first day of the Celtic season was exactly what the supporters had hoped for.

After Celtic blasted four goals past a Kilmarnock club that they found difficult to handle in the previous season, it appears that Brendan Rodgers’ team has continued where they left off.

The Kilmarnock manager, Derek McInnes, gave his assessment of his team’s performance at Celtic Park after watching them chase shadows for the majority of the ninety minutes at Parkhead. Brendan Rodgers was ecstatic about the Celtic victory and commended Reo Hatate for his performance.

McInnes finds the Celtic press astounding.

After the game, McInnes acknowledged his team’s bravery and talked about what he found “bizarre” about Celtic’s 4-0 victory.

According to McInnes, [Sky Sports], “That’s quite a brave performance.” It was a really hard game on Thursday, so I talked to the players about displaying a lot of character and the challenges we face today returning from Europe.

“I’m not suggesting we’re giving up this game, but in the end, we knew we had to compete and execute a lot of things well in the game,” the player said, looking ahead to Thursday night’s European match.

And it occurred to me that we did that in part. Robbie McCrory hasn’t got a lot on his plate. They’ve obviously scored four goals, which may sound a little strange, but Celtic’s excellent counterpressing play was responsible for the first one.

“We make the wrong choice, and they win at the edge of the box after they loose it. To make matters worse, the second goal was a set play. Whether you’re playing at Celtic Park or somewhere else, you need to be strong after you lose a set play.

“Celtic has been playing a lot of goals like the third one throughout the preseason. Both the lateral pass in behind persons and the straight pass into front players.

Derek McInnes believes he has “learnt a lot” from Celtic’s loss.

Even though McInnes was hurt by the loss, the Kilmarnock manager acknowledged that he had learnt a lot from it and expressed his observations about the way Celtics manager Brendan Rodgers used Matt O’Riley.

“We would never have come here to shake hands on a 2-0,” McInnes went on. We continued to think that we could come and perform for you.

“We had a difficult time losing 4-0, but Celtic did have some strong moments,” I said. Their motion is excellent. O’Reilly, playing a little higher, is probably closer to a ten than an eight. It’s difficult to quit being influential and to keep good guys down.

But today, I discovered a lot about my team since it may have been simple to assume that we wouldn’t be able to perform as well as we did because it would have been too difficult. I believed that we were in competition. That’s all I can ask for, in my opinion.

Kilmarnock was a difficult nut to crack for the Celtic supporters last season, so they will be overjoyed to have sent them packing.

After the 5-1 title-clinching victory and the Flag Day victories, Celtic has now scored nine goals against Derek McInnes’ team in two games, and it appears that they have ended the mini-hoodoo against Kilmarnock.

Next Sunday, Celtic’s next challenging test in Rodgers’ quest to retain the Scottish Premiership title will be a difficult trip to Edinburgh, where Hibs will be waiting.
