While I can appreciate their concerns with this protracted process, I believe any anger directed towards the club is unwarranted. Those who claim that we should start looking at other targets and that we could perform better than Idah are, in my opinion, forgetting what we could have in the Irish international.
As far as we know, Norwich is attempting to negotiate a difficult price for Idah. Though I don’t believe it was a mistake on the side of the club, I was shocked that Celtic hadn’t worked out an option to buy fee with the Carrow Road team when he came up the road in January.
Idah would have been his manager’s third choice striker at the time and wasn’t in the plans. Since he had a long-term contract, it’s possible that Norwich was astute to decline to give him a buyout option in the hopes that he would make an impression and increase his value on the transfer market.
Given that Celtic almost always has an option to buy arrangement in place with the loan players they bring in, I would be quite confident in hazarding a bet that this is what happened. We may have had to end the negotiations without an option to purchase in order to ensure Idah’s signing for the remainder of the previous campaign, as the manager was adamant that we needed another striker at the time and that he was obviously Rodgers’ pick.
Idah came to Celtic and couldn’t have been anymore impressive. His signing didn’t excite the vast majority of our fans, in fact if we are totally honest a lot of the fan base were hugely disappointed that our big January signing was Norwich’s third choice striker. In this day and age players can’t avoid fan opinion like they used to. Adam Idah would have known that most of our fans weren’t overly excited by his arrival. Instead of letting that affect him he got his head down and showed all of us what he’s made of.
That demonstrates his mentality as a potential Celtic player. How many players have we had throughout the years who, while wearing the green and white hoops, gave in to the pressure of expectation? Too numerous to list. As a substitute striker, Idah contributed significantly to our winning the Scottish Cup and the league championship. To be honest, we might not have won either title if Idah hadn’t scored some important goals at key moments.
Sometimes fans have short memories, but we must never forget what Idah accomplished in the previous season. He worked as a professional model. When he made game-changing plays or scored important goals and was benched the next week, he didn’t seem to mind. He threw himself into Celtic and gave the team his all. He was obviously having a great time playing for the team and the supporters. By all accounts, he appeared to be well-liked by his teammates.
We should definitely want a player like this on our team. a player with prior experience and proof. A player who is aware of the club, the supporters, and the meaning of representing Celtic. a player that consistently delivers in the most important games. Although the transfer has grown annoying, this does not imply we should give up on Idah and hunt for another solution.
We could go out and invest £6 million in a new striker who performs similarly to Albian Ajeti. We should continue with someone who is sure to be worth the money, in my opinion. Idah is radiating positive energy as well. He’s exerting every effort to return to Celtic. He has quietly made it known that he wants to leave Norwich and play for Celtic. This has given Celtic the advantage in talks.
Celtic, in my opinion, is also addressing this problem well. Although many would see it as penny-pinching, we won’t be taken advantage of by avaricious Norwich who are playing tricks. There are rumours circulating from Carrow Road that they may be bidding as much as £12 million for Idah, which is absurd. When he left, he was their third-choice striker. Now that he’s returned, it’s evident to all that he wants to go to Celtic and is not interested in staying. Having a player who wants to go doesn’t work well, as we have repeatedly learnt. They are aware of that. They are trying to maximise the cost because they are aware that their season’s transfer budget will only include the money they can obtain from this transaction. It’s not your fault.
In this case, the cards are completely in our favour. This does not imply that we ought to treat Norwich poorly either. All parties concerned, including the two clubs and the fans, are aware that a £5–6 million charge is appropriate, in my opinion. Norwich is attempting to hold out for the highest price, but their manager will need the money to rebuild, so they won’t be able to resist for very long. Hopefully, a price that pleases both clubs can be worked out quickly. These things can take time, as Paulo Bernardo shown, but ultimately, all you can hope for is that both teams would put aside their games and act honourably.
Idah demonstrated his Celtic suitability last season. I just hope our supporters don’t lose sight of what we will be getting if he signs because of the controversy surrounding his transfer. Idah has proven to be a man who can be counted on to show up when things count most. It is worthwhile to wait for a player like that.
