At Tynecastle, both teams shared the spoils in an exciting Premiership debut. The outcome might give Celtic an early advantage in the title match when they play Kilmarnock tomorrow, but Clement thinks his team could be useful at the end of the season.
Under the guidance of the Ibrox boss, Barron made a solid start. Despite his impressive performance against Cammy Devlin and Jorge Grant, Clement believes the Gers need the leadership and expertise of the recently retiring John Lundstram in the middle of the park.
“We weren’t playing well in the first half; we weren’t physical enough in the duels,” Clement said to Sky Sports following the game. After we had the ball, though, we were overly enthusiastic, inadequate, and misplaced. We showed this at the break, and in the second half, we improved and played better football.
“We realise it’s not at the top yet. In the end, it will be a crucial point against a team that finished third the previous season because of the players we lost and the new ones we are bringing in. I believe the outcome is just and that we won the second half after Hearts won the first.”
When asked about his lineup, which appeared familiar, Clement responded, “We have some new players like Connor Barron and others who missed pre-season. Lundstram is there to lead the team out of the midfield, thus you are missing a fairly key piece. Oscar Cortes is recovering from a similar injury, and he was unlucky today to injure his knee after tripping after a tackle.
“We are aware that we must construct. Ultimately, it’s a just outcome. This game might have gone either way for us or the Hearts. It’s going to be crucial, so let’s keep working towards Tuesday and get well. Kiev is a further advancement.”
