Arsenal are keeping an eye on Manchester City attacker Julian Alvarez as interest in the Argentina international intensifies, according to sources.
So far this summer, the Gunners have signed two players: former loanee David Raya from Brentford on a permanent basis, and Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna.
Arsenal is searching for a new striker, with reports suggesting Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon and Victor Osimhen from Napoli are potential candidates.
And now it appears like Mikel Arteta may have another choice as he attempts to improve his Arsenal side next season after missing out on the Premier League title by two points last season.
Many commentators and former players believe Arsenal is just one clinical striker away from winning the league, following Man City’s fourth consecutive championship under Pep Guardiola.
Arteta has already returned to his previous club on two times, bringing Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus to the Emirates Stadium in summer 2022.
According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal is studying Julian Alvarez’s dispute with Pep Guardiola, as the Argentina international decides his future after the Olympics.
‘City’s Catalan boss’ attitude that he will never prevent a disgruntled player from leaving might open the door for Mikel Arteta to raid his former club for a third time, following the arrivals of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko – but at the appropriate price.
The Premier League winners are expected to seek roughly £80 million in addition to add-ons for the Argentine World Cup winner, which may be too much for the London club.
However, if local duo Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson follow Emile Smith Rowe out of the club, they will have the funds to make a serious bid.
Arsenal reportedly’returned’ for Napoli striker Osimhen after Paris Saint-Germain ‘dropped out’ of the deal.
According to Football Insider, Tottenham ‘may hijack’ any deal for Osimhen, with former Everton CEO Keith Wyness saying he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Spurs pursue the Napoli striker.
Wyness stated to Football Insider that the number nine is the deciding factor between the top four.
“With the current roster, I believe they will still be lucky to qualify for Europe. A lot of clubs are making major adjustments. They’ll have to make the big signing.
“Archie Grey is a fantastic talent, but that is not the answer. Someone, such as an Osimhen, needs to come in.
“I wouldn’t be shocked if Spurs are monitoring Osimhen’s position at Napoli. He’s someone they should keep an eye on.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano stated Wednesday that Arsenal are “closing in” on the signing of Spain international Mikel Merino.
Romano stated in his Caught Offside column: “Let me add that Arsenal are really closing in on a deal for Mikel Merino, and let me emphasise that the package will be approximately €30 million.
“We’ll know the framework of the deal in the coming days, but the agreement between Arsenal and Real Sociedad is very, very close. Everything is nearing completion.
“I’d also want to discuss another Mikel Arteta.
“We know he is negotiating a contract extension, which Arsenal expects to be completed soon. The Spaniard, together with Edu Gaspar, has significant market influence for Arsenal, and Arteta works extensively behind the scenes to advise transfers.
“He was the one who wanted Riccardo Calafiori as a top target, and now that he’s at Arsenal, the club has clearly done an outstanding job.
“Arteta is also behind this story for Mikel Merino because he is familiar with the player and has been keeping an eye on him for quite some time.
“Of course, the board and the scouting department at Arsenal believe that signing Merino is an excellent opportunity. Merino is anticipated to be Arsenal’s second signing of the summer transfer season.
“Despite some fairly strong rumours too, honestly, I have no concrete updates on Viktor Gyökeres.”
