On This Day: Ronny Deila’s Celtic win the League Cup

This day: The League Cup is won by Ronny Deila’s Celtics.

Gordon, Ambrose, Denayer, van Dijk, Izaguirre, Brown, Bitton, Commons, Johansen, Stokes, and Griffiths were the Celtic players; Liam Henderson, Forrest, and Guidetti were substituted in from the bench.

Bobby Madden officiated the game, which drew 49,259 spectators, the great majority of whom were obviously Celtic fans.

Of all the Celtic’s cup final victories, this one was by no means the most exciting. It was game over when Kris Commons broke the tie shortly before the half hour mark. On 79 minutes, James Forrest put an end to any late dreams of a comeback from Tayside. At that point, Jackie McNamara’s team consisted of just eleven players following the dismissal of captain Sean Dillon.

In addition to scoring from the bench, Forrest also missed a late penalty.

This was the first of Celtic and Dundee United’s three straight encounters. In the Scottish Cup Quarterfinal, Celtic defeated McNamara’s team 4-0 three days later, adding to the anguish. After three more days, Celtic won the Premiership 3-0 as Deila’s team advanced toward the championship.
