Former Sunderland man Lynden Gooch has reacted to a memory shared in social media.
Fans of Southland will recall and appreciate Gooch’s name.
The American ended his 11-year tenure with Stoke City last summer as a free agent, joining Alex Neil there.
Gooch’s Stoke City lost 3-1 to Sunderland earlier this year, and some Potters supporters accused Gooch of not giving it his best against his old team.
Gooch played for Sunderland in the League One downturn as well as the Premier League and Championship.
But there was one or two highs in the third tier for Sunderland, with one being their EFL Trophy win which was three years ago on Thursday.
Lynden Gooch reacts to Sunderland EFL Trophy win
In League One in 2020–2021 Sunderland won the EFL Trophy.
At the time, Lee Johnson served as the manager. Gooch participated in the championship game at Wembley, but no fans were present to witness him or his colleagues.
Gooch won the match that day as Sunderland defeated Tranmere Rovers in the championship game, which took place during the pandemic.
Reacting to the news that the final was three years ago this week, Gooch posted on X:
Sunderland struggling in the Championship
Sunderland have now lost their last six in the Championship and it’s clear that they’re missing something.
And that something may well be players like Gooch, Alex Pritchard, and Danny Batth who provided not only experience to the team, but Championship quality.
Many of Mike Dodds’ players are currently underperforming, which is challenging because many of them lack championship experience—or even very little experience—in any case.
Gooch was a guy who consistently put up his best effort for the shirt, and when he got the armband, he deserved it.
Even if he had shortcomings, particularly in the League One years, his effort and resolve never wavered. His thoughts before the run-in might have been different if he were still a member of the Sunderland starting eleven.
There’s a sense that, if Sunderland lost against QPR this weekend, they could really land themselves in trouble in the Championship.
With a win, QPR may move five points behind Sunderland and into the relegation zone, where they now lie with only nine points above the drop zone.
Gooch’s Stoke City, on the other hand, are currently six points below Sunderland in 12th place and are in 19th place, well in the relegation zone.
However, Stoke is a different team that has the potential to push Sunderland lower in the Championship standings in the upcoming weeks, having won two of their previous three games.
