Keith Wyness shares intriguing verdict on Michael Edwards plan as he makes Liverpool return

Keith Wyness provides an unexpected opinion on Michael Edwards’ strategy as he returns to Liverpool.

Keith Wyness, former Everton manager, has urged returning sports director Michael Edwards against starting a “revolution” at Liverpool.

On Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old CEO of Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009, who now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, stated that “keeping the ship in the right direction” post-Jurgen Klopp would be a “major success”.

On Tuesday (12 March), Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group confirmed Edwards’ return as the club’s new CEO of Football.

Last Friday (8 March), Football Insider reported that Liverpool is on the verge of hiring ex-Bournemouth manager Richard Hughes as their new sports director.

Edwards warns against Liverpool’s’revolution’ next season.

The duo’s first priority will be to replace Klopp as manager, who revealed his impending exit in January.

Edwards previously worked at Liverpool from 2011 until 2022 and is credited with recruiting Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Sadio Mane, and Andrew Robertson, among other players who have gone on to become

 

Wyness stated on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast that Liverpool, Edwards, and Hughes would be successful if they maintained their current level of performance.

“They’re competing for the league; there isn’t much else they can aspire for.

“If Hughes and Edwards can maintain this level, continue to play good football, and continue to perform extremely well in the transfer market, it will be better than a revolution.

“Rather than tearing everything up, they need to keep the ship moving in the right direction.”

“That would be a huge success on its own.

“Maintaining stability behind the scenes will be crucial. I’m confident Edwards will have a huge influence in who succeeds Klopp, and there’s no reason why that machine can’t continue to function.”
