How Sunderland have fared heading into international breaks since Championship return

Callum Jacques has the most recent Sunderland news ahead of the Championship weekend’s schedule.

When Sunderland takes on QPR at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, they’ll be hoping for a change of luck as the season’s fourth international break draws near.

Fans of the Black Cats should rejoice because Sunderland had a strong recent record in the matchup prior to the international break. Prior to the international break, Sunderland had played six games following their promotion from League One two years prior. The Black Cats went into the break having won three and drawn two of their six games; their only loss came against Middlesbrough back in October.

Sunderland 3-1 Birmingham

In the seventeenth minute, Jobe Bellingham gave his former team the lead. Thirteen minutes later, Koji Miyoshi of Birmingham tied the score. Adil Aouchiche made sure Sunderland would take all three points in the 76th minute after former Sunderland loanee Dion Sanderson threw the ball in his own net to give Sunderland the lead.

Sunderland 0-4 Middlesbrough

Before the October international break, Sunderland lost to Middlesbrough at home, their worst loss of the season. After challenging the referee, Dan Neil was sent off just before halftime. The home team’s performance significantly worsened in the second half as Boro scored goals through Isaiah Jones, Sam Greenwood, Matt Crooks, and Marcus Forss in the final 45 minutes.

Sunderland 5-0 Southampton

As Sunderland’s season-worst performance occurred right before the international break, so did their best performance. Back in September, the Saints were destroyed by the Black Cats. In the first minute, Jack Clarke scored the first goal, and in the seventh, Pierre Ekwah added another. Before the half, Sunderland led 3-0 thanks to goals from Chris Rigg and Bradley Dack in the second half, and Ekwah scored another in the 45th minute.

Sunderland 1-1 Luton Town

Sunderland drew with Luton Town at home in March of last year. Alfie Doughty gave the Hatters, who are currently in the Premier League, the lead, but in the 86th minute, Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo gave Sunderland a point through a penalty kick.

Birmingham City 1-2 Sunderland

At the St Andrews stadium, Sunderland defeated the Blues before the 2022 World Cup winter break. Ellis Simms, an Everton striker on loan, gave Sunderland the lead in the 25th minute, and Diallo doubled the lead in the 49th. In the 78th minute, Lukas Jutkiewicz gave the Blues a goal back, but Sunderland won the entire match to take all three points.

Watford 2-2 Sunderland

Before the international break in September 2022, Sunderland appeared doomed to lose, but in the 87th minute, new recruit Jewison Bennette scored the team’s first goal to earn a point. The goal occurred after Keinan Davis and Luke O’Nien’s own goals gave Watford two goals ahead.
