Former great reveals he ‘negotiated’ a £10 million deal for Rangers ace, but discussions fell through.
Ianis Hagi could have joined Russian giants Spartak Moscow for £10 million before moving to the Scottish Premiership with Rangers.
According to Gica Popescu, a former Romanian international and brother-in-law of Ianis Hagi’s father, the renowned Gheorghe Hagi.
Spartak Moscow blames Hagi Sr for a breakdown in discussions with Viitorul Constanta’s playmaker, who is currently owned by Rangers.
The Russian company offered a cool £10 million. Hagi, on the other hand, would transfer to Belgium with KRC Genk for around a third of that amount, with his father believing that the Champions League football available in Limburg was more important than the significant wage increase the then-rising star would have received in the north.

“Ianis received a 12 million euro offer from Spartak Moscow,” Popescu told Digi24.”I bargained it.Why wasn’t (the contract) completed?Gheorghe (Hagi) did not want it.
“Gheorghe picked a sporting project. Genk was in the Champions League, and (Hagis’ father) said, ‘I want him to play in the Champions League’.”
Spartak, on the other hand, were in no mood to give up so simply.
“On the other side was Spartak Moscow, who offered 12 million euros and did not stop there,” Popescu said. “When I told them that the move had fallen through, the club’s owner called and said, ‘I’m flying to Constanta. If money is a concern. I’m coming in a private aircraft to renegotiate.
“At that time, we had 12 million euros.Gica said, ‘No, don’t come!Ianis goes to Genk for 3.5 million euros!’
“At Spartak, he (would have) earned four or five times more than he did on the opposite side.You have no idea what would have occurred at Spartak, or what he would have done.
It’s difficult to say.
Future is unclear.
Hagi’s future as a Rangers player is questionable after this season.
Despite being on loan at Deportivo Alaves in Spain, he has not received consistent playing time there. Hagi’s Ibrox career might be rejuvenated, similar to Ridvan Yilmaz. However, the presence of Tom Lawrence, Todd Cantwell, Mohamed Diomande, and other Rangers players makes it difficult to see where he fits in.
