Sunderland owners tipped to make huge off-field decision if they lose v QPR
When they lose to QPR this weekend, Sunderland is expected to make a possibly significant decision.
After six Championship games, Sunderland has already suffered six defeats.
The Black Cats suffered their first six-straight loss since 2006 last weekend after losing 4–2 to Southampton.
This weekend’s matchup against QPR promises to be extremely difficult for Mike Dodds’ interim team, who currently sits in 12th position in the standings with just nine points separating them from the drop zone.
The R’s have only lost one of their last five games, pulling themselves out of the bottom three. A victory this weekend may move them up to 17th place and reduce the difference between them and the Black Cats to just five points.
If they lose against QPR, Sunderland‘s owners may make a significant management decision.
Prior to this weekend, EFL commentator Sam Parkin discussed his assessment of Sunderland’s situation on the Championship Check-In podcast. If the team loses against QPR, he suggests that the owners may have to make a daring move regarding management.
Parkin said:
If they manage to lose one more, that is. They are able to… It’s possible, I suppose, that they could do something. Though it seems unlikely that the individuals in charge will be with the club for very long, they might yet bring someone in to assist. Perhaps they will consider it.
Additionally, he said:
I usually argue that a manager should be fired after six or seven defeats, but I realize that’s not the situation we’re in with this situation. It is quite desperate, though, if you get what I mean.
“Big Sam” might be necessary for Kyril Louis-Dreyfus to stop the decay.
It’s undeniable that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman would have serious concerns if they lost this weekend.
Additionally, Sunderland might be in serious trouble if a number of the teams at the bottom win this next weekend.
With just six points separating Sunderland from Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday in 23rd and 17th place, respectively, the Black Cats are still very much in the hunt with 27 points remaining.
It may be necessary for Louis-Dreyfus and Speakman to bring someone in if things become worse and Sunderland finds itself in a very precarious league position.
As Parkin suggests, it may require a Sam Allardyce-type person, or perhaps a Neil Warnock with a wealth of Championship and survival experience, to oversee the remaining few games and guarantee Sunderland’s Championship position because clearly things aren’t working under Dodds right now.
The worst-case scenario for Sunderland would be relegation. All of their hard work over the last few years would be undone, and they would truly suffer a setback.
With a win this weekend against QPR, Dodds, who is still a respectable coach, and the team would be under much less pressure.
Prior to Saturday’s match at the Stadium of Light, QPR is undoubtedly given the upper hand in the form table.
