EFL reveal ‘disappointment’ over Premier League decision that impacts Black cats, Leeds & co
Championship news: The EFL have responded to the Premier League’s failure to agree a ‘New Deal’.
Earlier this week, Premier League teams were unable to reach an agreement on a “New Deal” for the EFL
that would have given the 72 Football League clubs approximately £900 million over the following six
years. Rather than proceeding with negotiations and a decision on this potential contract now, the
Premier League has postponed these until after their AGM in June, when they are anticipated to reveal
new financial restrictions and do away with the contentious Profit and Sustainability Rules.
But the inability to reach an agreement on the EFL, dubbed the “New Deal,” has left clubs in all three
EFL divisions uncertain about their fate. Peter Ridsdale, the chairman of Preston North End, criticized
the lack of a contract, and the EFL issued a statement on Thursday after a board meeting.
In it, the EFL criticized the Premier League for failing to reach a settlement and demanded “independent
input” to facilitate negotiations. The EFL Board met today and reviewed its stance regarding the Premier
League Clubs’ recent discussions, according to a statement. “We are obviously disappointed at their
repeated failure to put forward any new funding offer for EFL Clubs that would have significant benefits
for the entire football pyramid,” the statement stated.
