Tam McManus has suggested a points deduction for obscene yelling that occurred during Rangers’ game against Hibernian on Sunday (10 March).

On Wednesday (13 March), the pundit stated on the Daily Record website that the unprintable chanting from Gers fans towards Hibs forward Martin Boyle during the match at Easter Road was “terrible” and “sickening”.

When asked about potential fines that could be imposed on teams for their supporters’ actions,

McManus replied that docking points could be “the way forward,” but allowed that such a response would result in “mayhem.”

“Hibs’ statement acknowledges the problem with their own support,” McManus continued.

“It’s about time that other clubs followed suit. Sunday appeared to be the last straw.

Rangers fans’ taunts at Martin Boyle, which cannot be repeated in this medium, were horrible.

Sickening.

“Do not believe this is only directed at the Rangers. Every club has a problem element.

“The chanting, especially from the Old Firm, is unacceptable, but how can you stop it?

Should we begin fining clubs? That will have minimal impact on the best clubs unless significant penalties are imposed.

“Or should we go all out and start docking team points? Perhaps this is the way forward,

and the government will be in charge of enforcing it, but imagine the outrage. It would be chaos.

The fundamental truth is that this is a societal issue, and it is up to individuals to recognize when things are out of order.”

There is no place in football for vulgar chants following the Rangers incident.

It is undeniably a problem in Scottish football, and it will be difficult for the authorities to address given how long it has been going on.

There is a lot of attention on fan conduct in Scotland right now, and there is also a debate regarding flares.

However, some of the chanting heard is just horrible and has no place in a sporting event.

While they stem from deeper issues, there is no reason for some things to be sung and football to be pushed to the sidelines.

It is quite unlikely that points deductions will be applied because it would be unfair to the teams or the average fan,

but it is not an issue that will be forgotten anytime soon.
