Celtic FC Women prepare for St Patrick’s Day showdown with the Rangers

It’s a big weekend for Celtic FC Women as Elena Sadiku’s team plays the Rangers Women on Sunday, March 17, in their first post-split match. The team is hoping to win on St. Patrick’s Day, which would blow the SWPL1 title race wide open.

accessible…

This season, Celtic has suffered when playing the Rangers. Despite leading each time, they have lost all three games against them at Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie by the odd goal.

The expensively assembled team headed by Jo Potter mercilessly revealed the hard reality of the lack of depth in the Celtic squad, especially in the forward areas.Yes, it’s true that the Rangers made significant roster improvements in the summer after concluding the previous campaign without a championship and failing to advance to the Champions League.

Celtic lost important players from that thrilling team that had such a successful season finale. Because he was facing Celtic teams that posed virtually little threat to goals (apart from Caitlin Hayes at corners), Fran Alonso’s choice to accept the job offer in the States was made slightly easier.

When Elena Sadiku took over, the Swedish coach had a rough start after losing back-to-back games to Glasgow City in the SWPL1 and the Rangers in the Sky Sports Cup semi-final. To Alonso’s credit, he continued to win the other games to keep Celtic in the title race.

Sadiku must have been taken aback by the lack of first team-caliber forwards in her roster, but with Kit Loferski returning to full fitness after a protracted injury and Tash Flint returning on loan from Liverpool, Sadiku now has the firepower to worry the Rangers. With Amy Gallacher in the mix, Celtic has a front three that is capable of carrying us to victory.

But as it stands, we are four points off course. Without defeating the Rangers, we cannot win the championship. At Ibrox last month, we had numerous opportunities to end the game at 1-0 but we let up an equalizer against the run of play. We could have and should have done that. We had the best opportunity to win the game even then, but we were unable to find the back of the net.

But Sunday is the great opportunity to set up a close-quarters championship battle that will end in a shootout to the finish. If Celtic FC Women win on Sunday, they will have a significant trophy in their sights—one that this club has yet to capture.

Since everyone will be watching Airdrie on Sunday, why not get along and cheer on the Ghirls?

This is the team practicing in preparation for the St. Patrick’s Day visit from the Rangers Women.
