Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has confirmed that Jacob Ramsey will miss the second leg of our Europa Conference League round-of-16 tie vs Ajax.
The 22-year-old was substituted out of our victory against Luton Town on March 2 after just 29 minutes of play. He then missed the first leg in Amsterdam last week and was not there for our weekend’s loss to Tottenham.
Based on Emery’s earlier remarks, it was anticipated that the Villa star would return to training this week and be eligible to play against both Ajax and West Ham United. However, the Villa manager has since stated that the striker will not play against the Dutch powerhouse.
“Hopefully not for a long time, but he is still not available,” Emery stated to the press prior to kickoff. Although we will check in with him daily to see how he is feeling, he won’t be available tomorrow.
Ramsey has been limited to 21 appearances so far this season, scoring one goal and providing two assists, as he was sidelined by a foot injury at the start of the campaign before it flared up again shortly after.
Having clutched his foot at Luton, there was concern that he had re-aggravated the issue once again, but based on Emery’s comments above, it doesn’t sound as though he’s expected to be ruled out for as long this time round.
Even still, his absence is concerning because he adds talent, enthusiasm, and balance to the Villa XI. We need to win twice this week to bounce back from a crushing loss to Spurs, and our hopes of finishing in the top four and winning trophies are at stake.
Emery will need as many options as possible in midfield, especially with Boubacar Kamara sidelined due to a long-term injury and John McGinn now facing a three-game Premier League suspension following his dismissal on Sunday. With that in mind, the hope is that Ramsey can force his way back into the picture when we visit West Ham on Sunday.
