Sunderland are set to be without defender Jenson Seelt for an extended period

The news that Jenson Seelt will be out for a “long period of time” has dealt a serious blow to underland’s injury situation.

Seelt sustained a knee injury during Sunderland’s 4-2 loss to Southampton. Although the full extent of his absence is unknown, it currently seems doubtful that Seelt will play again this season. Seelt had started Sunderland’s previous four Championship games.

Seelt promises to use “everything in his power” to overcome the setback and bounce back stronger.

Seelt posted on Instagram, saying, “I’m devastated to share the news that I suffered a knee injury during the game against Southampton.””I was not prepared for this, and I will be away for a while. I must put all of my attention into my recuperation for the time being and make every effort to return stronger and better than before. Every challenge we face in life offers us opportunities to learn and transform it into something positive.”

With Dan Ballard doubtful and Luke O’Nien suspended for this weekend’s visit by QPR to the Stadium of Light, Mike Dodds faces a serious defensive conundrum. Ballard tried to play on but was forced off the pitch in the second half of the Southampton match due to a hamstring injury. Leo Hjelde is the only other natural centre defender in the team; since joining, he has spent the majority of his time playing full back. Nectar Triantis is now on loan at Hibernian.
