Because of his “poor defensive displays,” Nathan Patterson is currently Everton’s fourth choice, per Michael Ball.
In response to the Scotland international’s tweets on March 12, the former Toffees defender acknowledged that while many fans would like to see more of the former Rangers player, he has fallen in Sean Dyche’s hierarchy.
Patterson, 22, began the season as the team’s right-back starting and went on to start five straight Premier League games to close out 2023. However, as of right now, he has not even appeared in seven of eight games in 2024.
“Many fans agree, but regrettably, because of his poor defensive performances, he has found himself fourth choice,” Ball wrote.
He went on to say that the defender needs a run of games that are consistent, saying, “Very true, unfortunately EFC hasn’t had the luxury to offer that this season.”
Everton supporters want to see Scotland international Ben Godfrey start at right-back.
Throughout his tenure at Goodison Park, Dyche has alternated between full-backs on both sides of his defence on numerous occasions.
Both Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko have had difficulty at times winning their manager over, but Mykolenko, a Ukrainian, has emerged as a consistent starter on the left side after beginning the season as Ashley Young’s backup.
The fact that the veteran of Manchester United and Aston Villa hasn’t exactly been on top of the game this season, but yet seems to be ahead of the Scot, isn’t exactly a compliment to the player who cost up to £16 million to sign from Ibrox [Sky Sports].
It’s dubious if current starter Ben Godfrey should start above club captain Seamus Coleman, let alone Patterson, given his shaky full-back positioning and lacklustre offensive production.Because of their inconsistent form, there is much room for discussion on the Everton players who are now playing, but if the Scot is positioned behind a center-back and two men who are a combined 73 years old, his chances of succeeding under Dyche at right-back don’t seem promising.
