Michigan’s Ann Arbor (AP) – A person with direct knowledge of the hiring process told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Michigan is nearing completion on a contract to bring running backs coach Tony Alford from rival Ohio State.
The individual talked under the condition of anonymity because the specifics of the contract and university approval were still being finalized.
Alford will take over for Mike Hart, the former standout player for the Wolverines who spent three seasons as Jim Harbaugh’s running backs coach.
When assembling his first staff following Harbaugh’s return to the NFL, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore made a risky choice by bringing on one of Ryan Day’s top assistants from the Buckeyes.
A little over a year ago, Day promoted Alford to run game coordinator after hiring him away from Notre Dame in 2015 as running backs and assistant head coach.
Two months ago, Harbaugh left to take the helm of the Los Angeles Chargers after leading the Wolverines to their first national championship since 1997. He urged Warde Manuel, the athletic director, to appoint Moore as Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator.
