Major Sunderland injury blow as ‘gutted’ defender likely to miss Leeds United clash

Defenseman Jenson Seelt has been confirmed to be out for ‘a considerable period of time,’ meaning Sunderland will likely be without him when they visit Elland Road next month.

Despite playing the whole 90 minutes at St Mary’s, Seelt sustained a knee injury during Sunderland‘s 4-2 loss to Southampton on Saturday. Having featured in their 1-0 victory over Leeds during the interim manager’s initial stint in December, the 20-year-old had started his team’s past four Championship games and was obviously a favorite of manager Mike Dodds.

Sunderland has lost their last six league games, and they are now experiencing a terrible run of luck. They visit Elland Road on April 9 but appear to be missing one of their main defenders for what should be a thrilling midweek matchup.
Seelt revealed the following on his official Instagram account: “I’m devastated to announce that I sustained a knee injury during the Southampton game. I’m going to be absent for a while because this caught me off guard. I must put all of my attention into my recuperation for the time being in order to return stronger and better than before. Every challenge we face in life offers us opportunities to learn and transform it into something positive.”

Seelt is anticipated to sit out that match at Elland Road alongside Niall Huggins, a graduate of the Leeds academy who had knee surgery in January. Jack Clarke, another former Whites star, hasn’t been able to exercise since the end of February due to damage to his ankle ligament, so he might also not be available.

Since mid-February, Sunderland has been in freefall following a string of losses that led to Michael Beale’s dismissal. After taking over as temporary manager, Dodds has presided over four straight defeats for the Black Cats, who are now 12th in the Championship. Sunderland’s next matches at Elland Road include QPR, Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers, and Bristol City.
