An EFL specialist has identified two ‘perfect prospects’ for the Sunderland manager’s post.

Former Black Cats striker Don Goodman does not feel the Sunderland position is a ‘attractive one’.

Don Goodman feels Steve Cooper and Ian Evatt are good candidates for the Sunderland post, despite the fact that it is “not an attractive one.”

The former Black Cats striker also feels the club should add three or four experienced players this summer to supplement the younger ones, especially if Jack Clarke goes as predicted.

Goodman told King Casino Bonus that the regulations and approach at Sunderland make it unappealing for top managers.

“I’ve heard Steve Cooper connected, and he’s a perfect option since he comes from an academy background, has worked well with young players, and has led Swansea to the play-offs twice and Nottingham Forest from the bottom of the league to the Premier League.

“He understands the Championship and has a reputation for developing young players.

“But is it an appealing position for Steve Cooper when he can’t sign the players he wants? I just don’t see how they’ll recruit a manager of his caliber. I hope they are already on the market and speaking with possible new management. Mike Dodds will be anxious to put together a run of results and get into the conversation, but he must do so soon.

He continued, “Ian Evatt would be an excellent candidate for the position. Bolton supporters will not thank me, but his style of play is quite similar to Tony Mowbray’s in terms of playing on the front foot, controlling possession, and attacking. Will he leave Bolton, though? For all of the reasons listed above, he may not desire the position.

“Stylistically, he and Steve Cooper would be ideal for Sunderland.”

In terms of player recruiting, Goodman recognizes the value of developing young players, but believes it only goes so far.

“Sunderland are rigid in their approach of only buying young players to sell them on and make a profit,” he said. “That will not get you to the Premier League.”It will help you become self-sufficient and secure your cash, but it will not bring you anywhere near the Premier League.

“I understand that when Jack Clarke leaves, Sunderland believes his replacement is already at the club and that they will nurture someone.

“As a fan, this is not what you want to hear. I understand why they want to go young, and I’m not suggesting they need a squad with a lot of experience, but they should reconsider their strategy. Three or four veteran players would greatly improve your chances of success.

Goodman even mentioned previous manager Michael Beale, whose disastrous tenure at the Stadium of Light was cut short after only 12 games.
