The Celtic star is now making waves down south, and Sunderland has been mentioned for his services.

Sunderland has been mentioned as a potential summer transfer destination for Celtic winger Mikey Johnston.

Despite unable to make a regular Hoops impression, the academy product has made 92 appearances for the Premiership team where he began his career. In January, he was loaned out to West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship due to little playing time under Brendan Rodgers.

He’ll be at the Hawthorns until the end of the season, but Baggies supporters are already hoping he stays. He has impressed with six goals in nine appearances, prompting questions about what may come next.

According to pundit Carlton Palmer, Celtic might want for up to £3 million for Johnston, with Sunderland and Norwich City being mentioned as potential destinations. In an interview with Football League World, the former England and West Brom midfielder stated, “Mikey Johnston has continued his flying time at West Brom since joining on loan in the January transfer window, netting his sixth goal for West Bromwich Albion in their most recent win against Huddersfield Town.”

“He’s having a great time since joining Celtic on loan. Yes, a lot of clubs will be taking note of how he’s performing, so you’ll be looking at clubs that are looking at players who are leaving, such as Jack Clarke and [Jon] Rowe, and people will be looking at Mikey Johnston as a potential replacement.

“But he’s having a great time at West Brom and enjoys his football there. He still has a contract with his parent club, Celtic, and no cost has been put into his contract, so it’s unclear whether West Brom will be able to finance him with the new owners in place.

“However, given his outstanding form for West Bromwich Albion, Norwich, Sunderland, and other potential Championship clubs will undoubtedly be keeping an eye on the situation.” With Sunderland’s goal of wanting to purchase young players cheaply, I don’t think Johnston will fall into that category, as I believe Celtic will be seeking for at least £2 million or £3 million given his record in the Championship.

“So whether Sunderland have the money to pay that, Norwich do have the money to pay for Mikey Johnston, so we’ll have to see come the end of the season, but he’s certainly done great things at West Brom and [is] attracting a lot of attention.”
