Aston Villa ‘worry’ after Newcastle and Tottenham repeat leaves Champions League dream in doubt

Paul Merson discusses his concerns about Unai Emery’s team in the competition for Champions League football in this Aston Villa news article from BirminghamLive.

Paul Merson has expressed doubts about Aston Villa’s chances of making it into the Champions League following their third straight home league loss since the start of the season.

Prior to losing 3-1 to Newcastle in January, Villa had gone 17 games without a league loss at home. Since then, Villa has suffered two additional losses against rivals in the Champions League, Manchester United and Tottenham. Spurs are currently just two points behind Unai Emery’s team, who is still in the top four, after winning 4-0 at Villa Park last time out. They still have a game to go against Chelsea.

Merson, a former player for Villa, expressed concern for his former team after seeing how they lost to Spurs.

“That Tottenham game was one of Aston Villa’s biggest games in years and they got blown away,” Merson stated on Sky Sports.

“In the last two weeks, I’ve watched Newcastle and Tottenham completely smash them. They only succeeded in suffocating them by pressing high. They haven’t got a clue or an alternative plan under circumstances like that. That is concerning. If you were a Villa supporter, though, you would take this circumstance. It’s incredible. They’re dreaming, but we can dream because it’s football.”

Before Villa takes on West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday, when they might once again move 11 points clear of United when the Red Devils take on Liverpool in the FA Cup, Fulham hosts Tottenham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Merson went on, “They’re still involved.” Spurs still have matches against Man City, Liverpool, and Arsenal. They have achieved a result if they receive three points from those contests. Villa returns to the top after a victory over West Ham.”
