The Rangers’ manager has been preparing for Thursday’s vital game.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement praises the forthcoming atmosphere at Ibrox for their Europa League last-16 second leg against Benfica.

The Belgian recognizes the significance of Thursday’s showdown against Roger Schmidt’s team. A 2-2 draw in Lisbon last week prepared the Light Blues admirably for the second leg at raucous Ibrox. “It was vital that I understood where the fire was when I arrived. James Tavernier was the first person I spoke to. In a noisy arena, you need experienced players on the field.”

Clement filed a loaded VAR claim. When questioned by the Portuguese media about “mistakes” committed by his side that resulted in two Benfica goals, he lambasted referee Tobias Stieler for awarding a Benfica penalty following a review of John Souttar appearing to head the ball onto his arm.

When asked what he had learned, he said, “That not only do my players make mistakes, but so does the referee.” It was unfortunate that I did not see the first goal before the press conference, but smashing a ball with your head against your arm does not constitute a penalty. So there was some help from that side.

Todd Cantwell’s return from injury is expected to bolster the team’s performance. Dujon Sterling is out, and Ross McCausland is racing against the clock to make the match. Clement added: “We have some returning players, like Todd Cantwell. My players are prepared, and the hunger is there. We recognize that we must play above our talent level in order to qualify. “We’ll give everything.”
