The future of St James’ Park is dividing Newcastle United fans, and now Alan Shearer has given his verdict.

With more people wanting to watch Newcastle United, the club is still considering what to do with St. James’ Park. Toon executives are eager to see more people enter the stadium.

The demand for tickets to home games has been so great since the ownership changed and Eddie Howe arrived that getting one is practically impossible unless you are a season ticket holder.

This has prompted recommendations that the club raise its capacity and enlarge St. James’ Park, although that is easier said than done.

It would be extremely difficult to raise the East Stand and the Gallowgate End to the level of the Leazes and the Milburn since St James’ Park is bordered by historic buildings.

As a result, there have been rumours of moving from St. James’ Park to a new stadium, which has split supporters. The club prioritises staying at St. James’ Park, as does the majority of the supporters.

It would be controversial to build a new stadium, and Alan Shearer has given one need that the team must meet in the event that they decide to vacate St. James’ Park.

Alan Shearer raises a concern over a new St James’ Park

Newcastle United - St. James' Park - A Brief History

In the most recent episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer discussed the possibility of the Newcastle owners constructing a new stadium and expressed one of his worries.

The fact that St. James’ Park is so close to the city centre is, in my opinion, one of its best features, he remarked.

“I think it has to be pretty much next door or really close because I think that’s why we generate such a good atmosphere and it’s so iconic, so if it is going to be a new stadium then it has to be pretty much next door to where it is,” said the speaker. “If they are going to extend it, fine.”

Newcastle owners have a tough decision to make about St James’ Park

Shearer and I both agree. Newcastle is currently experiencing something unique. Located in the centre of the city lies St. James’ Park. It is relatively distinctive due to its prominent location, thus we shouldn’t discard it in favour of a few extra seats.

Right now, there is a lot of discussion on the atmosphere at Newcastle games. Although the stadium is thundering on nights like the one against Paris Saint-Germain back in October, many worry that it is not loud enough at times.

Some of the smaller games this season have been remarkably calm, but obviously not every game can be like way. I wonder if some fans now expect to win specific games because we did so well the previous season.

Personally, I believe that if the team constructs a brand-new, cutting-edge stadium with space for over 70,000 spectators, there will be even more problems with the atmosphere. But that is a discussion for a different day.

In a perfect world, the authorities in Newcastle manage to expand St James’ Park. However, they will have to find a means to construct a new ground as close to the existing one as possible if it is not practical and raising the capacity is considered necessary.
